PA Games: Boccia and New Age Kurling

Tuesday 3rd December

The PA Games: Boccia and New Age Kurling competition showed some great focus from all the children that took part.

Both our Gainsborough team showed great manners and respect to everyone they played with, they also showed great rolling skills to get as many points as they can.

All they Hard work was rewarded as Gainsborough B Came out in 3rd place.

Year 3/4 Girls Football Festival

Yesterday was a great day for football as the sun was shining with a cool breeze blowing, and a whiff of freshly cut grass brushing our noses. Jumpers and coats scattered around with packed lunches filled to the brim and over spilling. 100's of girls running around in their  colourful football kits with energy to last a lifetime. Nervously waiting for their turn to play, watching in awe as each team scored game changing goals.

The girls started off with low confidence and as they got into more games they started to become confident and adamant to win and ended up playing in the advanced matches and scored loads of goals. They successfully got 1 win 2 draws and only 1 loss.

One of the girls scored an  amazing goal and they had great determination as well as great sports person-ship

PA Handball Years 3 and 4

Tuesday 26th March 2019

Gainsborough took part in the Primary Advantage Games held at Holy Trinity.

Congratulations on Holy Trinity winning the competition. St John and St James came second and our school came in third place.

Well done to our Year 3 and 4 children who demonstrated excellent sportsmanship.

Young Voices concert at the O2

On Tuesday the Key Stage 2 choir went to the O2 Arena to perform as part of the Young Voices choir.

There were over eight thousand children singing together.

We performed with a live band and professional dancers. 

Our parents and carers came to watch.

We had a great time!

Spanish Display

Come and see our Spanish display. You will get to see the best work of Gainsborough students during Autumn 2 term.
It is all about descriptions:

Year 3 described themselves as monster.
Year 4 learnt the zoo animals.
Year 5 described people in their class.
Year 6 we learnt about some naughty Santa's helpers that stole all the Christmas presents, they helped the police to find them by describing them.

A special concert for Years 3 and 4

Last week the Albion Quartet visited us and gave an interactive concert to Years 3 and 4. 

We heard some incredible music.

We learnt about dynamics and tempo.

The Albion Quartet will be coming back later in the year to work with us again. We can't wait!

RAF Celebration Fly Past

Last week we saw an impressive aerial display of aircraft fly over the playground on its way to central  central London to celebrate 100 years of the Royal Air Force. 

The spectacular event will took place as part of a series of special events throughout 2018 to mark the centenary. 

Featuring up to 100 aircraft, the flypast remembered the RAF's creation on April 1, 1918. Thanks to Year 5 for capturing these stunning photographs of the once in a lifetime event!

Hackney Music Festival

It's festival time!  

Today both the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 choirs performed at the Round Chapel as part of the Hackney Music Festival.  

What a great concert!  Well done everyone!

Stratford Waterfront Design Challenge

We have entered a high profile Architectural Design Competition to design a 'Playable Landscape' for the Queen Elizabeth Park II. Our entry has been submitted to a team of Architects from Allies and Morrison who will now judge the entries in partnership with professionals from V&A, UAL and the Olympic Park Legacy Project. Starlings Art Celebration Assembly

What is creativity? Why is it important?

Two of the questions Startlings answered in their Art Celebration Assembly.

They celebrated their amazing work on pattern with a moving assembly showing the imporantance of Art to our school.

Polyprints

At Art club we have been experimenting with Printmaking. Today we made polyprints by carving patterns into polystyrene. Then we printed them in a grid to make a design. Hetvi really enjoyed when the print revealed itself right at the end! Here are some photographs of our Printmakering in action:

Our exhibition

We are very proud to present our work for the 2018 Primary Advantage Art Exhibition!
This year the exhibition was held in St Mary of Eton Church in Hackney Wick so close to our school.All the work in the show was around the theme of Identity. We had assemblies to explore what Identity means to us before creating a variety Artwork inspired by our Identity.

Our Heritage by Year 1 from Gainsborough

In Year 1 we have been researching our family history and the countries of our roots. We photographed portraits of each other and overlaid these on top of maps to show the part of the world our parents have connections with. We learnt that our classes are filled with children from all over the world. This work celebrates our global identity.

Eyes Observational Drawing by Year 6 

Year 6 have been exploring ways to draw with skill using a variety of materials. We discussed how eyes can show emotion and are a huge part of our identity. Drawing from observation, we persevered with our drawings taking time to build up tone, light and shade. As artists, we explored how using different materials can give us a variation of styles.

Digital Self Portraits in the style of Julian Opie  by Year 1-6

As a whole school we created digital self-portraits inspired by artist Julian Opie. Opie paints portraits in a minimalist style with bold black outlines and bright colours. On the computer we carefully drew over our photograph to simplify the facial features. We then skilfully used vibrant colours to fill the background in Opie’s signature style. In this work, we celebrate our similarities, but also the ways we are all unique.

Science Week

Last week children across the school completed exciting DT challenges for British Science Week. These were linked to the Topics we have been learning about in school. 

In Year One we made boats to link to our Topic Oceans and Seas. First we did some experiments to see what would float or sink and to select the correct materials to make our boats. Then we designed and made our balloon-powered boats. 

We tested our boats on the Canal to see how far they would float!

In Year Two we made and tested Kites to link to our Topic Weather. We selected sugar paper because it is strong and flexible material that would lift up in the wind.

Luckily it was a windy day so our Kites flew beautifully.

In Year Three we made Rockets to link to our topic Explorers and Adventurers. 

First we conducted experiments to see how forces would power a Rocket. 

Then we designed and made our Rockets using recycled materials.

We tested our Rockets outside. They were powered using a chemical reaction between bicarbonate of Soda and vinigar.

We had to keep refining our mixture to make our Rockets lift off!

In Year Four we completed an Egg-Drop challenge. We had to design and make a device to protect an egg dropped from a height. This was linked to our Topic Inventions and Machines. 

We worked collaboratively to design our Egg Drop machine. 

   We selected materials to make our Egg Drop device. We had to think about how to protect an egg and create air resistance so it would float down slowly. 

We tested our Egg Drop device by dropping it from a height. 

    

Some of our eggs survived! Others weren't so lucky!
